It's always good to plan ahead and take the necessary items when going to the beach. Sometimes we get carried away with the excitement of going and we forget to take what we need to make the adventure enjoyable.

The beach attracts many people, whether locals or during travel. Some like to go for a swim to cool off. Some prefer to find a shaded spot and read a book and some even doze off. Children especially love to play in the sand and build sand castles. Whatever draws you to the beach, be sure to take what you need.

The most important items to take to the beach:

* sunblock
* cooler
* bottled water and juice
* sunglasses
* brimmed hat, especially for children
* healthy snacks such as fruit
* life jackets
* disposable wipes for cleaning up
* hand sanitizer
* appropriate footwear
* towels
* swimwear
* cover up
* beach chair or blanket

Fun things to take to the beach:

* plastic buckets and plastic shovels for building sandcastles
* a book or magazines if you like to read
* a Frisbee or beach ball
* portable stereo and cd's
* deck of cards
* balloons for some water fights

Since the rays of the sun are beating down on the beach, one of the most important items to take along is sunblock. Make sure you purchase the SPF that is appropriate for your skin and the time you will be in the sun. A sunburn isn't pleasant and it's very important to protect tender skin on children, especially. A brimmed hat will also help.

It's important to drink plenty of fluids to keep from getting dehydrated. The summer heat and the beach can take its toll if you aren't well-prepared. You sure don't want to cut the day short by getting a heat stroke.

Wearing appropriate footwear can prevent your feet from getting burned. As cozy as the sand may feel on your feet, it can be way too hot for comfort.

Pack the important items to keep yourself and your children safe. Pack some extras to add to the fun and your day will be one you want to relive again and again.

How to Prevent Frozen Pipes in Winter

Serious damage can result from frozen pipes in winter. The repairs can get quite costly and cause a great inconvenience as well. As water freezes in the pipes, it expands and causes an increase in water pressure and causes the pipes to burst. It's important to check your home's vulnerabilities well before winter and make adjustments where necessary. How can you help to prevent and deal with frozen pipes in winter?

Vulnerabilities

Depending on where you live and how the pipes are located in your home, there may be existing vulnerabilities. Some homes have pipes inside the insulation, which is a protectant. Even with insulation, depending on where the pipes are, they could be affected by very cold temperatures. Anywhere there is a flow of cold air coming in contact with pipes, such as in crawl spaces, outside walls, etc., they have the potential to freeze.

During winter, if you live in a cold climate, always be aware of freezing temperatures. Even if you live in a usually warm climate, there is the potential for temperatures to drop cold enough for pipes to freeze. Pay careful attention to weather reports so you can take measures to prevent frozen pipes. Pipes tend to freeze when the outside temperature is around 20 degrees or below. Windchill factors have to be taken into consideration as well. But, this will also depend on individual situations such as whether pipes are insulated, where they are and how much cold air they are exposed to.

Preventative Measures

If you are building a new home, get professional advice about the best way to route your pipes to prevent freezing. If you have an existing home, you may not want to spend money on rerouting pipes, but there are measures you can take to prevent freezing.

Hardware and most any home supply store carries insulated sleeves made for pipes. These sleeves normally come in different thicknesses. The thicker, the more protection your pipes will have. Electric heating tape is also available for pipes, but these should be used with caution and only use ones that are up to code. Some of the electric heating tape comes with a thermostat to cut on and off as needed. Some do not have a thermostat and will have to be manually plugged in. These may not be the ideal option since it would be easy to forget when to plug in at the needed time.

Although you may not like wasting water, opening a faucet when the temperatures dip down, will relieve the pressure that builds and very likely will prevent your pipes from freezing. An open faucet with a very slow drip can be very effective. It's best to open both the cold and hot faucets. You won't need to open the faucets in areas where there are no vulnerabilities.

We all want to save money in the winter on heating costs, but this could end up costing you more for repairs if pipes freeze. Keep your thermostat high enough so pipes won't freeze, especially when you are going away for a while. Your indoor temperature should be at least 55 degrees to prevent pipes from freezing. If you are going to be away for an extended period of time in cold months, it would be best to have a trusted person to check on your pipes.

Be careful about keeping garage doors, crawl space doors closed where pipes can be exposed to cold air. Insulate these areas well. Insulation will keep the areas warmer in general, which will help to prevent frozen pipes.

Frozen Pipes

If you notice the dripping at your faucets has stopped, this could be a sign your pipes have frozen and need another way of relieving the pressure. Calling a professional would be best in this case. If the pipes have already burst, it's advised to turn the water off at the main, which is usually at the meter outside of your home, and keep the faucets open until repairs can be made.

Don't use an open flame to thaw frozen pipes. This can be dangerous. There could be damage to pipes or could start a fire. Some people use a hair dryer to thaw frozen pipes. This can work sometimes if done properly. The heat should be applied at a low setting and slowly applied. The utmost caution should be used when using a hair dryer since it is an electrical appliance. Never use an electrical appliance in standing water or near dripping water.

With patience and experimenting, you can find out what suits your child best. Sharing these activities with your children is even better and will encourage them more.

Building confidence - when a child feels good about themselves, they are inclined to take better care of themselves, which in turn, leads to better health. Children sometimes turn to food for comfort when they are stressed or feel bad about themselves. Food becomes the friend they can count on. Instill a positive, but not arrogant, image in your child. Help them to believe in themselves and always be a trusted and guiding force. Make them feel loved...always.

Don't use food inappropriately - food is often used as a reward or a pacifier for children. In balance, this can be appropriate, but overdoing it can lead to expecting food under certain conditions that isn't appropriate. Find ways of rewarding your child outside of food. Help them to learn ways of pacifying themselves without food being involved.

As a parent, you design the habits children form early in life. Be an actively involved parent who instills healthy habits in your children. This isn't just for their health, but it also shows them just how much you care.

How to Add Volume to Fine or Lifeless Hair

Always pull the hair straight up to roll and use sections of hair no wider than the roller itself. Secure roller and lightly mist with a non-sticky hair spray suited for your hair. Allow hair to set for at least 15 minutes. If you allow it to set longer, you'll have more volume and more staying power.

Credit card offers can seem very enticing, but be careful to read the terms, completely. Keep in mind, credit cards are a form of borrowing. Charges are applied! You can choose for your card to work for you or your card to become your worst nightmare. Learn to make your finances work in your favor.

APR - Annual Percentage Rate is the interest charged on balances. This fee can vary quite a bit from nearly 30% down to below 5%. APR's may be fixed or they may change in accordance to the prime lending rate. Interest rates may be different for purchases, cash advances and balance transfers. If you plan to use your card to build up credit and will pay your balance off each month, the APR isn't as significant. The APR becomes more important if you will be carrying a balance. Some companies will increase your APR if you make late payments.

Annual Fee - Some companies charge an annual fee. After you've had your card for a period of time, you can call the company and often they will waive the fee if your account is in good standing. Some companies are getting away from the annual fee. Browse around to find the best deal.

Late Fees - If your payment is late, a late fee is applied and it can be quite hefty, in the range of $15 - $50. Avoid late fees. You could use this amount to apply it to your balance.

Cash Advance Fees - There is usually a fee for cash advances and the interest rate is normally higher. Don't use cash advances unnecessarily.

Over Limit Fees - Most credit cards come with a credit limit, ranging from a few hundred dollars to thousands. If you go over this limit, there will be a penalty, normally $20 or more. Find out what your limit is and be careful not to go over it.

Secured Credit Cards - For those who have bad credit, some companies will offer a secured credit cards. You pay a security deposit (typically around $100) and the credit limit is usually quite low (typically around $200 - $300). I don't recommend secured credit cards unless this is the only option you have to build up credit and will pay your balance off each month. The interest rates are normally very high. I would exhaust all measures before applying for a secured card.

Credit card companies are often willing to negotiate after you've had your card for a period of time and your account is in good standing. I no longer pay any annual fees and each year I call and ask for my APR to be decreased. I've never been denied!

Credit cards can help build credit and that credit can be very useful if you apply for a car loan, home loan, etc. But, credit cards can be your worst nightmare if not used wisely. It's your choice to use them wisely or find a way to clean your credit once and for all.

"God's Battered Child"

A true story of childhood abuse and God's enduring promise

God had a provision for April Lorier, but as a severely abused child, that was difficult to grasp. She was a pastor's daughter and knew God from an early age. Her mother was abusive and her father passive. She was called the "bad child" and her sister Janine was favored for reasons she could not understand until well in her adult years.

Having ADHD did not make it easier. This escalated her mother's rage. Her mother had also been abused and had no coping skills and transferred what she had experienced onto April. The beatings from her mother and her father's passive behavior did not make her feel loved as a child. How could God love her as He did others, if her parents didn't even love her?

April's mother expected perfection. April went to school and came home to do endless chores, while her mother was often sick in bed. If there was one wrinkle in the clothing she ironed, her mother would make her sprinkle them with water and do every piece of clothing over again. She had no friends as she had no time for them. She felt isolated and abandoned, even by God. She looked to Him to save her from the abuse, but still it continued. She had faith God could save, but lost faith he could save "her".

April was ecstatic when she got to visit her Grandma. Grandma always had her favorite gingerbread cookies, but more than anything she savored her Grandma's words... saying that she prayed for angels to watch over April. April didn't understand exactly what those words meant for a long time, but they held great meaning.

April became "ill" during her childhood and was diagnosed with epilepsy. One of the "angels", a doctor, appeared later in her life to explain she did not have epilepsy and "why". This was a life-changing moment. But, during her childhood years and when she was "sick", she got some of the attention she badly needed, but only as each "episode" appeared. Her illness was not to be discussed as the family did not want to be shamed and especially within the church. April was hidden in a closet when her mother had piano students in their home. Her mother, as well as April herself, had great musical and vocal abilities. Appearances were everything to her mother, even if that meant living a different life within the church than what went on in their home.

Her first marriage came at a very young age and with that came more abuse. April's adult life was filled with a few marriages, chaos, crisis, including rape and sodomy and the inability to believe God loved her. She also had children and began to question her own parenting and coping skills.

Secrets about her father came out one by one, which were upsetting and also explained a few things. His past also influenced the husband and father he became.

In retrospect, April saw the "angels" that God did indeed send into her life, the ones her Grandma often talked about - her best friend Patty she met in childhood, a teacher who was encouraging and uplifting and called April the story-teller, overlooking her "lies", the doctor who told her she did not have epilepsy and why she needed to make changes in her life, the God-mother and other people who filled in the gaps that had left her very empty. Even the "way" her mother died became a source of faith, as her mother always said she never wanted to die a slow and painful death.

There was a period of time April had to break contact with her mother in order to discover herself. This was her time for recovery! Her mother was not pleased with this, but it proved to be a great blessing. April met with her mother later on and gained closure, yet was surprised to see how frail and old her mother now looked. After her mother's death, she discovered parts of her mother she'd never known, hidden within an old trunk - she discovered the love her mother had for her, but could not express. She found pieces of her mother's life that made her understand her mother more. A huge gathering attended April's mother's funeral and she saw another part of her mother who gave to others what she could not give to April. Her mother had given to those in need and led many to Christ.

There are so many twists and turns to this story. It would be difficult to sum it all up in this article. April's story isn't fiction. It's the true account of her life and how she went from a battered child to public leadership and ministry. She is the founder of C.O.P.E., a non-profit organization formed for the retraining of abusive and neglectful parents and also for public education. Her testimony before the California State Legislature helped to promote the enactment of the Mandatory Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Law in 1974.

Even as a writer, I find myself faltering for words to describe the impact, the profoundness and the inspiration I received from this book. God had a provision for April Lorier and it's abundantly clear in her book. She is a true gift to this world and to God's Kingdom. God "re-defined" what she had experienced and been, to who He wanted her to be.

I've been given the pleasure of speaking to April on the phone. God works in mysterious, but miraculous ways!

How to Deal with Gossip That Hurts You

Unfortunately in life, there will always be gossips. Sometimes this gossip is easy to look over and sometimes it can tarnish your reputation. If you find out someone has broken trust and told your deepest secrets and you've become the talk of the town, you will have to decide how to handle the matter. No one likes their reputation being twisted and degraded by people you don't even know. How do you handle this unfair gossip and betrayal?

You have placed trust in someone, by sharing with them, your innermost thoughts. You feel the pain of betrayal and the loss of trust.

Should you confront the person or let it go?

This is a personal choice, but if the issue keeps eating at you, it's much better to confront the person you trusted and see why they betrayed you. You trusted them as a confidante and you'll have to make the choice whether to keep this person in your life or let them go. If you don't confront them, you'll hold resentment that you may never let go of.

Don't have the confrontation until you have calmed down. There's no reason for a war to break out between the two of you, even though the temptation might be there. State your feelings tactfully and ask why they told others about your private issue. Listen attentively to gain understanding. This does not mean their reasons are acceptable, but it's important to listen attentively so you can decide if this person should be in your life. Maybe they made a horrible misjudgment and are very remorseful. Maybe they are a habitual blabbermouth who cannot be trusted.

Allow this person to know how their betrayal affected you - how much being the talk of the town and your reputation being tainted, has hurt you. Express your feelings in a genuine manner. Let them know you trusted them with your private innermost thoughts because of how much you thought of them. Express how you were very disappointed and confused because of their betrayal and the violation of your relationship.

How do you regain your credibility?

Trust and betrayal causes a lot of pain. How do you deal with the gossip? That's simple - you don't. Not at least, as far as defending yourself, against those who are gossiping.

Hold your head high. Live by example and allow the gossip that tarnished your reputation, die a natural death. You don't have to defend yourself or your tattered reputation. Just let it be. Those that know you, won't believe the gossip. Those that do, have issues bigger than yours.

Gossipers can be insidious people and they can become a victim of other gossipers themselves. Gossipers feed on gossip. Today you are the talk of the town - next week it will be somebody else's turn.

The exact history of pizza has been debated. This is largely because pizza has evolved over many years and been prepared in various ways, although similar. Before pizzerias became a common thing, you could often see street vendors selling slices of pizza on the street. In today's modern world, you can get pizza delivered to your home easily and find pizza restaurants on most any street.

Pizza is certainly a favorite food, whether you enjoy it with just hot and bubbly cheese or the works. My Easy Pizza Recipe with a Twist isn't a traditional pizza because I use tortillas as the crust. It's very easy to make and tastes quite good. It's also great for the kids to make as it doesn't take much preparation. They can have fun coming up with various pizza topping combinations. Whether you want pizza for lunch or dinner or just a snack while watching a great movie, you can prepare this in very little time and be satisfied with the results.

Easy Pizza Ingredients

wheat or flour tortilla (1 per person)
pizza sauce of your choice
shredded cheese (I use a casserole blend, but mozzarella is good)
for extra flavor you can add a bit of thyme and/or Italian seasoning

Add any combination of pizza toppings:

mushrooms, onions, olives, banana peppers, sausage, hamburger, pepperoni, bacon, pineapple, ham, etc.

Easy Pizza Directions

Spray aluminum foil or baking sheet with Pam. Place tortilla on pan. Spread pizza sauce on tortilla. Add a thin layer of cheese and then toppings of your choice. Add another layer of cheese. Bake at 400 degrees until tortilla is crisp and cheese is bubbly.

Cut pizza crossways and crossways again to get four slices from one tortilla for easier serving. You can serve the pizza alone or with a delciious salad.

Purchase Limited Number of Maternity Outfits

Think about your due date and the seasons you will be pregnant. Although you will have to wash more frequently, you can get by without having a huge maternity clothing wardrobe during your pregnancy. Several tops that are in season, one skirt and a few pair of pants is often enough to get you by without spending a fortune on a new maternity wardrobe. Some women don't gain much weight for a few months during their pregnancy and a lot of maternity clothes may not be required.

Purchase Gently Used Maternity Items

One way to decrease pregnancy costs is to purchase gently used clothing and maternity items. You can find pillows to prop up your legs, maternity clothing, nursing bras and even support items that are gently used at second hand stores, consignment shops, yard sales and even through Internet auctions. You may even have friends or family members who had a baby recently and could borrow some of their maternity clothes.

Public Community Gyms and Pools

Find out if there are any public community gyms or pools in your area instead of joining a paid-membership gym. There should be different levels of classes and even water exercises that will fit your exercise and fitness needs during your pregnancy. You will be able to stay fit and enjoy the benefits of exercise during your pregnancy without spending a fortune.

Support Groups

Check with your community resources for community support groups and Christian support groups. Pregnancy is an exciting time. However, sometimes it helps to have someone to talk to and get support during your pregnancy. Support groups are excellent to socialize with other women going through pregnancy. You can take advantage of community or Christian groups and for free.

Meeting Your Nutritional Needs

Whenever possible purchase your food wholesale. There are bakery thrift stores in many communities. You can often find bulk items or wholesale items at a significant discount.

Look for sales and stock up on nutritional snacks and menu items. Combine sales with coupons and you can save a great deal of money to decrease pregnancy costs without giving up nutrition and calories your body needs.

Your wedding reception has the potential to blow your budget with the refreshments or meal you want to serve. This also depends on how many guests you will have attending. You don't have to follow tradition or you can combine tradition with a new twist of your own. How can you have a memorable wedding reception and stay within a reasonable budget?

For Early Afternoon Weddings

Desserts - a dessert buffet works great for an early afternoon wedding reception. You can serve an assortment of desserts including pastries, cookies, candies, small cakes, truffles, along with coffee and punch. You may have friends or relatives who love to bake and could offer their delicious treats.

Outdoors - for a summer wedding an outdoor reception can work well. You could have a picnic in a park or even a BBQ in your own back yard. For a picnic you could include the traditional picnic foods such as salads, fried chicken, corn on the cob, green beans, rolls and also some inexpensive desserts and a couple varieties of drinks. For a BBQ, the options are plentiful from steaks to chicken and kabobs. This will of course depend on your budget.

Tea party - a tea party is perfect for an afternoon. It fits well within most budgets. You could include a variety of teas, coffee and maybe champagne for drinks. For food you could have small cakes, tarts, finger sandwiches and toasted panini.

For Evening Weddings

Buffet - a buffet can work well and there's a variety of food to suit most everyone's taste. You could include soup, rice, potatoes, a variety of pasta, a variety of bread, an assortment of vegetables or salad, along with sliced turkey, cabbage rolls or roasted chicken and some simple desserts. A buffet with this large of a variety may be more expensive, but still within a reasonable budget if you are having a lot of guests.

Keeping it simple - if you don't want to spend as much as you would for a buffet, you can keep it simple by offering a variety of sliced meats and a variety of cheese. Include an assortment of bread and crackers and also fruits such as strawberries, grapes, sliced apples with dip. You could add some side salads and of course drinks.

Cocktails - an evening wedding would do fine with a cocktail wedding reception. You could serve non-alcoholic and alcoholic drinks along with garnishes. Light foods such as raw vegetables and dip, a variety of nuts, chips and salsa and cheese and crackers and cocktail wieners would would well.

You may choose to have your wedding reception catered and this will lessen the pressure. But, if you have friends or family members who will help out, this can greatly lesson both the expense and pressure. Fruit, meat and cheese trays can be purchased at quality delis, which would save you time and effort.

Do your homework and check around to see what and who is available before spending a fortune. Your wedding day should be memorable, but not in a way that every time you go to the mail box you're getting a bill 10 years after you said "I do".

Most kids carry a backpack to school. With needing to carry books and supplies to and from school, a backpack becomes a necessity. Unfortunately, they can also cause an overload of weight. If the backpack and contents are too heavy or not worn properly, they can cause neck, back and shoulder pain or possibly cause muscle and join injuries. How can you prevent backpack overload and possibly injury to your child?

Purchase backpacks with two wide, adjustable and padded straps. Dense material and padding is more protective. Your child should use both straps of the backpack for better weight distribution.

Heavy items such as books should be centered in the back pack.

Backpacks are also available with wheels and a handle. This may be a good alternative if your child has a heavier than average load.

Teach your child to wear the backpack only when necessary.

Be especially cautious if your child has to struggle to get the backpack on or off, indicating it is too heavy. If your child has marks on their shoulders after wearing the backpack, it's time to look for a new one.

Backpacks come in all colors and styles. Kids want to be trendy, but they also need to be free of any harm. Choose wisely when shopping for your child's backpack.

Spinach is rich in nutrients and not only contains vitamins, but also fiber and anti-oxidants. The nutrients that are contained in spinach can help guard eye health, fight heart disease and reduce the occurrence of the common cold, among other health benefits. Some nutrients will be lost if spinach is cooked. By eating spinach raw in spinach salads you will get the most health benefits.

A lot of people cringe at just the thought of spinach. Part of the reason may be, they haven't tried it in various ways.The following recipes are great for summer or really any time you want a delicious salad. My neighbor told me about the basic recipes and I changed it just a bit to my personal preference. This spinach salad is filling, yet light enough if you want to serve it as a meal along with a good crusty bread and a refreshing drink such as iced tea.

Spinach Salad Recipe

Spinach Salad Ingredients:

fresh baby spinach leaves, washed well
5 slices bacon, cooked and crumbled
1/2 - 1 red or sweet onion, thinly sliced
1/2 cup mushrooms, sliced
3 hard-boiled eggs, chopped
grated Parmesan cheese
croutons

Spinach Salad Directions:

Place spinach in large salad bowl. Add cooked and crumbled bacon, red or sweet onion, mushrooms and hard-boiled eggs. Fold ingredients lightly into spinach leaves. Sprinkle with grated Parmesan cheese and top with croutons. You can increase or decrease the quantity of any ingredient you want more or less of.

Tropical Fantasy Fruit Smoothie Ingredients:

Heaping tablespoon of locally produced honey
1 heaping cup of chopped fresh strawberries
1 banana chopped
Half cup drained crushed pineapple
2 kiwi peeled and chopped
1 pear peeled and chopped
1 cup vanilla yogurt
1 cup orange juice
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1 teaspoon ginger

Directions:

Combine all of the above ingredients together in a blender or food processor to make four servings of Tropical Fantasy Fruit Smoothie.

Being single is sometimes viewed in a negative way. There are many people who are single and happy. Of course, some people who are single aren't happy. Either way, there can be advantages to being single.

Decreased Financial Burdens

Being single enables you to make your own budget and choose what to spend money on. You don’t have to consult with a partner in the relationship. For example, if you want to save money by turning off your cable, there is no one else in the household to get upset or consider. Being single allows you complete freedom over what choices you make financially.

Some couples end up with financial problems because they aren’t keeping good records of ATM withdrawals, checks written and so forth. Living single means that you are the only person in the bank accounts and you know exactly what you have or do not have available financially.

Freedom of House Décor and Design

As a couple, we blend our items together. One of the advantages to living single is the complete freedom over your home décor and design. There isn’t the worry and fuss over certain special items being placed out in the home. You can pick and choose which things you set about.

You don’t have to worry about colors, themes or so forth blending together while living single. It's your home to choose how to decorate and design for you. For example, you can place all the pots and pans in one particular spot without regard to others being able to reach them or liking where you put them.

Lower Food Expenditures and Utilities

You can buy in bulk and store items or freeze them. This means that planning meals is much easier when living single. Simply fix items and freeze in one serving portions. You can save a great deal on food expenditures.

Living single you can control the temperature of the thermostat, cut off lights that aren’t being used, unplug appliances, time showers and so forth. It is much easier to have control over the utilities when there is only one person living in the household. You are in control of what happens for going green and for saving on utilities as a single. While you can encourage household members to cut corners to save on utilities, it is still not in your complete control.

Dress More Casually

There are some women that like to have on make-up and be dressed in a certain way before their husbands arrive home in the evening. There are some men that like to come home and get dressed nicely for their wives. You don’t have to worry about this with single living. You can dress however you like as a work from home wage earner or when you return from a long day outside the home from your job.

If you’re not planning on going out or anyone coming over, you can skip shaving. You can wear your comfortable clothes that you like the most. For example, do you have a favorite shirt that has holes in it because it has been washed so much over the years? You can just relax in this shirt without worrying about anyone else around you.

For some people, being single is a choice they make and they are happy with it. Whether you are single by choice or by design, you can find advantages to your status.

Creating a New Living Room Look

Most people keep the same look in their living room year after year. This can get tiring and your budget may not allow you to make drastic changes by remodeling or buying everything new. The living room is usually the first room you see when you go into a home or at least the second area after the entry. It's a place where family and friends gather. It's important to create a look that makes your house feel like a home, a place you truly enjoy. Whether you like a country style or a very modern style or something in between, you can make a few inexpensive changes that will create a new look in your living room.

Eliminate First

The first step in creating change in your living room is to look around and see the items you don't really like. We all tend to display some items out of habit more so than actually enjoying them. Sometimes we overfill a room with too much furniture. If you don't want to get rid of the items, store them. You may find a use for them later on - maybe in another room you want to create a new look in.

Rearranging What You Already Have

One of the best ways to give a room a different look is to rearrange the furniture. You can move the couch to the opposite side of the room or maybe angle it in a corner if you have a large room. Grouping furniture in a different way can add new appeal.

Don't forget end tables, accent tables, wall hangings and lamps. They can also be rearranged for a unique touch. You can rearrange what you have displayed on tables, too. It's a simple change, but can have a big effect. Displaying items that reflect who you are and your interests works well. For example, if you love to read, you can display a couple of your favorite books on the coffee table.

Try various combinations of furniture and accent placements until you find a look you like. You don't have to go by traditional rules.

Think Color

You can change the look and color of your couch and chairs by adding slip covers if you don't want to go to the expense of having them reupholstered. Even something simple as a pretty afghan or throw can add a different look to what you already have. I've even used dainty lace curtains to cover a chair for a romantic look. Look around your home for what you already have that can bring new life to your living room.

If you like your couch and chairs and don't want to change them in any way, you could add accent pillows with a vibrant color. If you already have accent pillows, you could recover them with another color.

Small accent tables and book or wall shelves can be painted without much expense. You could add a single small decorative wall shelf for displaying candles. You can often get these in stores for just a few dollars.

If you are inventive, you can change the look of your living room with each season. This can easily be done by changing the color of accents.

Additional Touches

By adding something new to a room, it can enhance the overall look. You could add large plants, a large room-size rug or a large mirror. Pretty vases and lamps are very eye-catching. Flea markets are often a great place to find unique items to add to the decor of your living room. Look for items that work with the atmosphere you're trying to create.

Whether you have a very tight budget or some spare money to splurge with - or whether you think inside or outside of the box, you can change the look of a room for anything from free to inexpensively. Just use your imagination and be creative.

The Last Supper

The Crucifixion

Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the common hall, and gathered unto him the whole band of soldiers.

And they stripped him, and put on him a scarlet robe.

And when they had platted a crown of thorns, they put it upon his head, and a reed in his right hand: and they bowed the knee before him, and mocked him, saying, Hail, King of the Jews!

And they spit upon him, and took the reed, and smote him on the head.

And after that they had mocked him, they took the robe off from him, and put his own raiment on him, and led him away to crucify him. (Matthew 27: 27-31)

And as they led him away, they laid hold upon one Simon, a Cyrenian, coming out of the country, and on him they laid the cross, that he might bear it after Jesus.

And there followed him a great company of people, and of women, which also bewailed and lamented him. (Luke 23:26-27).

And when they were come to the place, which is called Calvary, there they crucified him, and the malefactors, one on the right hand, and the other on the left.

Then said Jesus, Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do. And they parted his raiment, and cast lots. (Luke 23:33-34)

Then the soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, took his garments, and made four parts, to every soldier a part; and also his coat: now the coat was without seam, woven from the top throughout.

They said therefore among themselves, Let us not rend it, but cast lots for it, whose it shall be: that the scripture might be fulfilled, which saith, They parted my raiment among them, and for my vesture they did cast lots. These things therefore the soldiers did. (John 19:23-24)

Jesus Dies and Is Buried

And it was about the sixth hour, and there was a darkness over all the earth until the ninth hour.

And the sun was darkened, and the veil of the temple was rent in the midst.

And when Jesus had cried with a loud voice, he said, Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit: and having said thus, he gave up the ghost.

Now when the centurion saw what was done, he glorified God, saying, Certainly this was a righteous man. (Luke 23:44-47)

When the even was come, there came a rich man of Arimathaea, named Joseph, who also himself was Jesus' disciple:

He went to Pilate, and begged the body of Jesus. Then Pilate commanded the body to be delivered.

And when Joseph had taken the body, he wrapped it in a clean linen cloth,

And laid it in his own new tomb, which he had hewn out in the rock: and he rolled a great stone to the door of the sepulchre, and departed. (Matthew 27:57-60)

And Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses beheld where he was laid. (Mark 15:47)

Jesus is Risen!

And very early in the morning the first day of the week, they came unto the sepulchre at the rising of the sun.

And they said among themselves, Who shall roll us away the stone from the door of the sepulchre?

And when they looked, they saw that the stone was rolled away: for it was very great.

And entering into the sepulchre, they saw a young man sitting on the right side, clothed in a long white garment; and they were affrighted.

And he saith unto them, Be not affrighted: Ye seek Jesus of Nazareth, which was crucified: he is risen; he is not here: behold the place where they laid him.

But go your way, tell his disciples and Peter that he goeth before you into Galilee: there shall ye see him, as he said unto you. (Mark 16:2-7)

So then after the Lord had spoken unto them, he was received up into heaven, and sat on the right hand of God.

And they went forth, and preached every where, the Lord working with them, and confirming the word with signs following. Amen. (Mark 16:19-20)

October Sky - Movie Review

A young boy, Homer Hickam, lived in the small town of Coalwood, West Virginia. Coalwood was a mining town and the last thing Homer wanted to do is follow in his father's footsteps and becomea coal miner. "October Sky" is based on a true story of of Homer's life.

Homer became intensely interested in building a rocket when he heard about the launch of the Sputnik. Homer told his friends about his idea and wanted them to help out. Homer's father discouraged him from fulfilling this dream, but Homer never gave up. There were obstacles along the way, but Homer's determination kept him going.

One person who had faith in Homer was Miss Riley, his school teacher. She was Homer's inspiration and encouraged him to keep pursuing his dream.

Building a rocket wasn't the easiest thing for Homer. There was a lot of frustration, trials and definitely errors. But, after so many ebbs and flows with his endeavor, the day came for him to exhibit his project. As the crowd gathered to watch the launch of the rocket Homer had perfected, his efforts paid off. The crowd waited in anticipation and excitement filled the air as Homer's rocket launched high in the sky. Even Homer's father showed up for the big event.

Miss Riley's faith in Homer and Homer's determination opened many doors for him. Miss Riley told Homer he had a chance of winning a college scholarship by entering a science fair with his rocket. Homer and his father grew closer and his father realized Homer wasn't cut out to be a miner. Not only did Homer succeed in building his rocket, but a closer relationship was formed with his father.

"October Sky" is an excellent movie. It's raw and filled with emotion and human interaction - much more than just about building a rocket. It's inspirational as well, proving how determination can move mountains, even for a small town boy.

Preheat oven to 400 or 425 degrees (depends on your oven). Melt one stick butter or margarine in cast iron skillet

Put the eggs in the bottom of a 2-cup container and beat slightly and then fill the rest of the container with milk.Pour liquid mixture into dry mixture and stir. Do not over stir.
Add the melted butter and stir into mix.Pour the mixture into cast iron skillet and bake for approximately 30 minutes.

Served warm or cold, Creamy Buttermilk and Ranch Noodles is great for lunch, a picnic or dinner. If you're looking for something simple to make, but flavorful, this might be for you. You can use some creativity and think of your own additions to this recipe, such as peas, green pepper, chicken strips.

Ingredients:

1 bag of wide egg noodles
1 cup mushrooms, sliced
2 TBS margarine
4 TBS chopped sweet onion
salt to taste
black pepper to taste
1 tsp chives
1 cup Buttermilk Ranch dressing
1/4 cup sour cream
Grated Parmesan cheese

Directions:

Cook noodles until tender, but not mushy. Saute mushrooms and onions in margarine until slightly tender. In a bowl, combine noodles, mushrooms and onions. Blend well. Add salt, black pepper and chives. Mix Buttermilk Ranch dressing and sour cream together. Fold dressing into pasture mixture. Top with Parmesan cheese. May be served warm or cold.

Note: You may prefer the mushrooms and sweet onion to be raw. If so, the butter isn't used.

Meatball subs are great this time of year when the temperatures are getting a bit cooler. The fall season may mean a lot of activities with running children to school activities, games, etc. An easy-to-make meal can save time, yet your family will still enjoy something delicious and filling. You can serve meatball subs with a salad for a well-balanced meal.

Meatball sub ingredients:

Frozen meatballs
Ragu Traditional spaghetti sauce
Sub buns
Provolone sliced cheese
Mozzarella sliced cheese
(amounts will depend on how many subs you are making)

Directions:

Heat and slightly brown frozen meatballs in a skillet. Add spaghetti sauce and let simmer for a few minutes until flavors are blended well.

Fill each sub bun with meatballs and spaghetti sauce. Top with one slice of Provolone cheese and one slice of Mozzarella cheese. Heat subs in 350 degree oven until cheese is melted and sub buns are slightly toasted.

Note: If you prefer homemade meatballs, you can make them ahead of time and freeze them for when you want to make meatball subs.

"The Bachelor" - Is it Possible to Find True Love on a TV show?

The ABC's reality TV show, "The Bachelor" is quite popular. I have to wonder how well a process like this works to find true and lasting love. I'm skeptical.

If you aren't familiar with "The Bachelor", it's a show where one man chooses from several women and the goal is to find a lifetime partner. Each week women are eliminated until the last woman standing is the one chosen. The bachelor gets to spend time with the women in groups and also with them on a one-to-one basis. They are all shown a good time with entertainment, adventure and often travel to beautiful places. The process takes several weeks. Can a person really find true love in this amount of time?

The process of choosing from several women is already made. Out of the entire nation's population of females, a select group of women are chosen for the show and the bachelor. Maybe this would make finding true love easier. Instead of randomly meeting people and possibly taking years to find the right one, you would be selecting from a chosen group who have the same goals - to find a partner for life.

I see some negatives with this process in general on "The Bachelor". With all the entertainment, adventure and glamorous places the contestants are indulged with, is it possible to really get to know the real person? How would the bachelor be able to tell which women were there with good intentions and which ones were there for the perks and fame? From watching the show, I see some women who appear very genuine and some who I don't get good vibes about. Emotions and jealousy often run high and there are even verbal fights that take place between the women. They all want to 'win', but is it just about winning for the sake of winning or 'who' they are winning?

Another negative I see with this process of finding a partner for life is that the bachelor usually falls for more than one woman. In the end, he does choose just one, but I'm not sure how I would feel about a man who has intense feelings for a few other women. On this season's The Bachelor, Jason Mesnick shed tears as some of the last few women were leaving. Some he became only friends with, but some he had developed very deep feelings for. Even if I were the one chosen in the end, I would wonder if he still had lingering feelings for the other women that he had such difficulty letting go. It would be similar to how a present partner hasn't gotten over an ex!

I noticed that Jason Mesnick, the bachelor, let go of the older women he was originally drawn to in favor of the younger women. Was it about their qualities and character or was he simply wanting a younger woman? Only Jason can answer that. I just saw good women getting eliminated that seemed to be a good fit for Jason and his young son Ty. I'm left to wonder what goes through the bachelor's mind when he is choosing the ones he's more drawn to.

One contestant was Jillian. She said she wanted a "best friend" for her lifetime partner. Jason only agreed with that to an extent. He said he wanted and needed more, he wanted passion. Apparently, Jason didn't find that passion with Jillian because he eliminated her. Jillian had some wonderful characteristics. She seemed genuine. She seemed stable and I believe she has what it takes to make a marriage work. That leaves you to wonder what kind of passion exactly is Jason searching for and is that passion what it takes to make a marriage work.

I also wonder about the emotional state of the women who are genuine and truly fell in love, but aren't chosen. They invested a lot of themselves. Yet, if they aren't chosen, they are sent home and have to heal from a break-up of sorts. Even though a lasting relationship didn't develop if they aren't chosen by the bachelor, the emotions are the same. It would take time and some emotional unraveling before they would get beyond this experience. In a platform of this type where it's a contest of sorts, I would think there would be a vast amount of emotions to unravel and many questions as to "why not me, what was wrong with me'? Competition is tough and when love is involved, it's even worse.

Rumor is that Jason Mesnick did find true love on this season of "The Bachelor". Of course there are several rumors floating around about the outcome. I wish him the best and hope this experience got him what he was looking for. Still, I'm skeptical of the process, although it is entertaining.

Sylvester: Home for the Holidays

Sylvester was a beloved family cat. As you might guess he was black and white like the cartoon character, Sylvester. He had a wonderful personality and got along well with my children or anyone who had the pleasure of meeting him.

When we went outside, Sylvester was sure to join us. He loved to frolic in the sun and could be seen wading through the snow in winter as he dipped his nose in the frozen fluff. He was always good to stay close by and not wander off into unknown lands...until.

Sylvester was about 3 years old and somehow got out of our site. This was very unusual and unfortunately it wasn't a matter of him missing for a day or even a week, but he failed to come back home. He was very much missed and there were no signs of him in the area. We placed an ad in the paper, hoping someone would call, but that didn't happen.

One Christmas Eve we heard a familiar meow outside. I opened the door and there stood a friendly cat that looked exactly like Sylvester. He came inside as if he knew where he was. I scrutinized his every marking and everything about him told me this was Sylvester. Had he come home for the holidays? What a miracle, in consideration he had been gone for about three years.

Sylvester was quite comfortable and acted as if he'd never left home. He enjoyed Christmas with us and especially having a treat of roasted turkey. We had various visitors coming in and out and unfortunately, Sylvester slipped out the door as one came inside. It was very odd how he felt so comfortable in our home, but seemed to have an urgent need to get back outside after Christmas. Once again Sylvester was gone and we haven't seen him since.

To this day, I'm not sure if this was our Sylvester, but everything about him made me believe it was. Maybe he had a furry family elsewhere he needed to get back to, but wanted to stop in for the holidays to see the people who gave him a start in life. Miracles do happen!

Rude People: How to Deal with Them

No matter where you are in the course of a day, you are bound to run into at least one or two rude people. Your entire day can be thrown off depending on when, where and how long you have to endure their presence.

There are two kinds of rude people...

* those who are just plain rude all the time and don't care who they hurt
* those who have an occasional bad day and feel remorseful for their behavior

The latter are those who, when the stress builds, need an outlet to explode. You simply were in the line of fire at the wrong moment. It isn't fair, but it could have been anyone! Their intentions aren't to hurt.

A person who is rude all the time doesn't hate you. They hate themselves. They possess unresolved issues and pain that causes them to transfer their anger onto others. You cannot fix them, but you don't have to allow their behavior to affect your well-being.

Sometimes, you feel like snapping back, but why reduce yourself to their level?

If it's a case where someone is just having a bad day, try to be understanding of their situation. Offer empathy, as we all have bad days. They may end up feeling worse than you do, by their own behavior and possibly apologize for it later. Sometimes people are rude unknowingly. They might think their opinions or comments were given in a helpful manner, but from your vantage point, it resounded rude and unthoughtful. Why throw fuel on the fire by being rude in return? We all have a difference of opinion and what they think is correct, doesn't necessarily make it so. Go by your own judgment and instincts and disregard their comments.

Often, the rude person can be a store employee. You may feel as though you never want to shop there again because of that one employee. Or, the customer may be the rude and offensive party. In either case, their presence is limited to only a few moments, so it's probably best to let it roll off your back. Store employees often encounter many offensive and rude customers throughout their shift. It can be very draining on the emotions. Although they are accountable for their behavior, understand they may have had an incredibly hard day and truly don't mean to attack you rudely. It isn't fair and you don't deserve to be mistreated, but don't make yourself feel worse by overreacting. Sometimes saying a kind word to the store employee is all it takes for their mood to turn around and for them to feel valued.

Rudeness can also be exhibited by someone's actions and not so much by what they say. Many people simply have bad manners and do not know how to act in a public setting. Depending on the person and situation, you can try to correct them tactfully, letting them know their actions are not conducive to a civilized manner. A certain code of decorum is expected when being out in public. If the person happens to be a stranger, the best line of action would be to walk away.

It is a mature person who thinks before they act or react, toward someone else's demeanor. Unfortunately, too many people do not take into consideration, how their actions or comments can affect another person. This is when arguments can arise, all because of one wrong spoken word or a bad reaction to someone's behavior or character. It is the more mature and wiser person who will just let it ride. Being polite to others will always be held in higher regard than those who would chose otherwise.

Why You Can't Change What You Don't Admit

Change comes first, from acknowledging and admitting what needs to be changed. If you don't understand what needs to be changed or are in denial, you won't be able to find solutions.

Some people fear admitting their flaws. If they look in the mirror, they may see someone or something they aren't ready to deal with. Issues usually become worse if not dealt with, but for some, they find it easier to stay stagnant than to work on solutions.

Admitting the need to change takes brutal honesty and some rebel against that honesty, even if it's for their own good. If what you're doing isn't working for you, why not attempt some change? The possibility is greater that the change will put you in a better place than the stagnant place you have chosen to be.

I have observed many people who complain endlessly and about the same issues. Sometimes the solution is obvious and relatively easy, yet they rebel against change and any help that is offered. I also believe part of the problem is... some don't take the time or have the desire, to look deep enough into themselves to see that change is needed. These are what I call "floaters". They float through life without much thought.

Personally, I find looking at myself with scrutiny and identifying areas that need improvement, a freeing and challenging experience. To be free, we have to get real!

First Dates: What to Talk about

A good impression on the first date means a good chance of a second date. Physical attraction is important to most, but what we say goes a long way in capturing and holding the other's attention. It's also just as important to listen to your date attentively.

A first date should be about getting to know each other on the surface and a little below, but not so deep there's no mystery left. Create a comfortable atmosphere that puts your date at ease. Don't ask questions that are too personal or too controversial. Interaction shouldn't be one-sided, but a balance between two people. Know when to be the speaker and when to be the listener. Your mannerisms can be as important as what you say. Be polite, respectful and use manners.

MUSIC

Music is a wonderful topic and can be expanded upon. Most everyone likes music. Find out the genres your date likes. You can build on this by asking about specific bands, artists, songs and what interests them about each. I like to discuss interpretation of lyrics. That opens a broad line of communication.

PLACES

Discussing places you've lived or traveled to can be very interesting. You may find you've had similar experiences or vastly different experiences you can learn from. Ask details. Ask what they liked or disliked about places they've lived or traveled to. You can learn if they like cold or warm climates, a bustling city or simplistic country life or something in between.

MOVIES

Movies, old and new, can create a wealth of discussion from the type of movies each likes to specific actors. Maybe they prefer adventure or horror movies as opposed to romantic or comedy. This choice helps give an insight to the type of person your date is.

PETS

Ask if they have any pets. This gives a good idea of compatibility. If they hate cats and you have a dozen of them, you might have a problem. Their reaction will be quite telling. Some people can tolerate pets and there are those who cannot stand to be around them. Couples have broken up over issues such as this. Better to know early on.

FAVORITE FOOD

Everyone eats so this topic can't go wrong. Discussing the many types of food can lead to knowing if they like to eat out or prefer to eat at home and also if they enjoy cooking. You may find your date is such a good cook they could be a chef or they don't know how to boil an egg.

LEISURE TIME

Asking about what they do in their leisure time can give you an idea if they are more the couch potato type or the more adventurous. You'll be able to gauge if your interests are similar enough should a relationship evolve. You'll also learn how interested they are in what you like to do and how they react to your choices.

SIBLINGS

Asking about siblings shows an interest in family life, but doesn't get too personal. You'll learn if they have close family ties and experiences they have had with siblings. They may offer a glimpse into their childhood which can be fascinating.

SPORTS

Some people hate sports and some are fanatics. Again, this topic can offer a view of your compatibility level. A love for the same types of sports can draw people close together and certainly involve many interesting discussions.

WHAT NOT TO DO

* Don't talk about controversial subjects. This can lead to tension.
* Don't talk about your ex. This implies you still have loose ends.
* Don't talk about finances. This is too personal for a first date.
* Don't lie to impress. Lies come out eventually.
* Don't have a wandering eye. Focus on your date.

Remember...too much, too soon of anything has a tendency to make a bad impression. Go slow, be yourself and keep things simple! Focus on your date so they know you are genuinely interested.

If you plan to use the car for long trips or keep it for a long time, you may want to consider buying new. The advantage of buying new is that the car will be under warranty for an extended period of time. Stay within your budget. Cars depreciate fast and a lot of money can be wasted on buying "status".

Before you buy:

Before buying new or used, check all costs. Call your insurance company and get a quote on the specific car you want to purchase. Sometimes the cost of insurance is very high on one car, while very affordable on another.

The cost of running a car has to be considered. You may find a great deal, but the cost of gas for a particular car may be very high. Consider how many miles per gallon of gas you will get.

If buying used, have an expert check the car out. This may save you a big headache in the end.

Buy a car in the size that fits your personal needs.

There is no absolute guarantee when buying a car. I've bought new and got a lemon and I've bought used and got a dependable car and vice versa. But, it always helps to check things out before buying.
